So after doing the first article about my thoughts on a new theme from TLG, I was really excited to try another one. I really like models and things of that nature and I would love for TLG to get into more themes that I am really interested in (right now the only two themes that really fully appeal to me are LOTR and Star Wars). So, I decided to use my own idea for this next one instead of one mentioned by another member, although I was assume many others have probably thought of this. This is:

As I have said in the last two installments of this, I have really enjoyed doing these as I entertain the possibility of me being creative enough to come up with a good Lego idea. Today I decided to do another movie – in fact one of the most box-office popular movies of all time: independence Day. The reasons I chose this movie? Well, besides it being very popular and quotable, any movie with aliens and spaceships are going to have tons of good ideas for Lego sets. Everyone loves aliens and spa

For my next try at being a Lego design star, I wanted to tap into something that could be a massive theme for Lego. It has been mentioned many times and I think most of us are pretty flummoxed that it hasn't happened yet – though we all probably agree it eventually will. This theme is Video Games. Now there are hundreds of thousands of great video games to choose from, so in this article I only wanted to look at one. This is probably the most recognizable video game character of all time and pr

For my next voyage into the land of fantasy Lego themes we will probably never see, but I can still dream of, I wanted to do one of my favorite shows of all time: Aqua Teen Hunger Force. Yes, this is definitely a tougher theme because it is a bit of a cult show and is not really a Kid's show (though it appears on Cartoon Network). However, we can always dream and hopefully there are enough Aqua Teen Fans here to know how awesome these sets would be – and how broke I would be. As well, I do think

For my next article on themes Lego really needs to do, I think I am going to go with the most obvious one out there: Disney World. Now many people have mentioned this, and Disney Land, and all the other Disney type themes out there. It is actually pretty hard to understand how it has not happened as well. Disney now owns Star Wars, Disney has also had along line of Lego sets in Duplo as well as several other film themes like Cars and the recent Lone Ranger. So how has it not happened yet? Well,

I had a lot of fun thinking up different Lego sets in part 5 when I did Mario Video games. I immediately had tons more ideas that came into my head. So this time I decided to do Nintendo 64 games. The Nintendo 64 was my favorite system of all time and houses some of the best made games ever in my opinion. I tried to take the best games and pull out the best stuff from them so that I had some good variety. I am leaving out Mario 64 since I already had written about that one. This theme can be cal

When I first got into Lego's, my wife was a little resistant. She thought they were cool, but just didn't really see anything about them that made her want them. Then she say a couple of themes she liked, for instance Harry Potter, and all of a sudden my obsession was understandable. Two of her favorite movie themes of all time are Star Trek and the Transformers series and so she immediately asked me if Lego had any of these themes. She was very disappointing to find out that Lego did not have

The 6211 Imperial Star Destroyer is a medium sized set from the Star Wars theme. The set has 1,367 pieces. The set retails for $99.99 USD. That means the Price Per Piece ratio is seven cents ($0.07 USD) per piece. There is another ratio that we use and that is the Price Per Gram Ratio (PPG). The set has a weight of 2.45 kilograms, or 2,450 grams. This means the PPG ratio is about four cents ($0.0408 USD) per gram. The set has nine minifigures, which are Darth Vader, Grand Moff Tarkin, Imperial O

The 7978 Angler Attack is a small set. The set has 200 pieces, with a retail price of $19.99 USD. This makes the Price Per Piece (PPP) ten cents per piece. Some times the PPP ratio is not accurate, so here is the Price Per Gram (PPG) ratio. The set has a weight of 0.32 kg, which is 320 grams. Since there is 200 pieces in the set, the PPG ratio is $0.0625 USD per gram. The set has two minifigures (Jeff Fisher and Barracuda Guardian), one of which is a rare minifigure, Jeff Fisher. The set also in

The 10193 Medieval Market Village is one of the larger sets from the castle theme. The set has 1,601 pieces. Since the set has a retail price of $99.99 USD, the Price Per Piece (PPP) ratio is six cents ($0.06 USD) per piece. I also use another ratio called the Price Per Gram (PPG) ratio. The set has a weight of for this set is 1.905 kilograms, or 1,905 grams, so the ratio is about five cents ($0.0525 USD) per gram. The set has eight minifigures. They are two Crown Knights, a maid, a blacksmith,

The 7884 Batman's Buggy: The Escape of Mr. Freeze is a small set from the Batman theme. The set has seventy-six pieces (76). Since the set has a retail price of $9.99 USD, the Price Per Piece (PPP) ratio is thirteen cents ($0.13 USD) per piece. There is another ratio that I use which is called the Price Per Gram (PPG) ratio. Since the set has a weight of 0.13 kilograms, or 130 grams, the PPG ratio would be about eight cents ($0.0768 USD) per gram. The set has two minifigures which are Mr. Freeze

The 8068 Rescue Helicopter comes from the Technic theme. The set has 408 pieces. The set has a retail price of $39.99 USD. This means the set has a Price Per Piece (PPP) ratio of ten cents ($0.10 USD) per piece. There is another ratio that is called the Price Per Gram (PPG) ratio. The set has a weight of 0.65 kilograms, which is 650 grams. For this set it would be about six cents ($0.0615 USD) per gram. Unfortunately, the set does not come with any minifigures. The set was released in late 2010/e

The 9465 The Zombies is a medium sized set comes from the Monster Fighters theme. The set has 447 pieces. The set has a retail price of $39.99 USD. This means the Price Per Piece (PPP) ratio for the set is nine cents ($0.09 USD) per piece. There is another ratio that I use and it is called the Price Per Gram (PPG) ratio. This set has a weight of 0.725 kilograms, or 725 grams. This means the PPG ratio is about six cents ($0.0551 USD) per gram. The set has four minifigures. They are Jack McHammer,

My ascendance from darkness has been gradual and, in many ways, continues to be so. In my younger days the light shone brightly; a satisfied youth entertained by the simplest yet richest of pleasures. The treasures of enlightenment were mine and there had never been reason to question the integrity of the beacon that burned bright. As I grew, the temptations and pleasures of the world impressed upon me, and what I once knew to be dazzling faded into insignificance. For many years, girlfriends, m

On my trip to BrickWorld 2013 in Chicago this past weekend, I had a chance to see the new 10234 Sydney Opera House in person. While I love the size and scale of this new mega-build set, I have some mixed feelings about the new model. First, here is a picture of the set and a link to the Lego Design video introducing it: Pros Incredible detailed, and very realistic The nested band shells make the model - exquisite modeling for these Continues the world landmark sets Appears it will be a p

As many of you can relate, my five year old son is crazy about Lego. He likes building sets, making his own little creations, and adding new sets to his collection. He loves minifigs. He loves Lego Star Wars, Legends of Chima, Ninjago, and now Castle Lego. He also likes to talk "investment sets" with me, and one day as I was perusing Amazon, he asked me why my Wish List was full of Lego sets. When I explained to him how the Wish List worked and what "priority" meant, he said, "Dad, I want to ran

Ed and I are going to do a trial run at allowing any Brickpicker members to create their very own blog here on the site. This will be a chance for people to post their own opinions, share their LEGO investing stories (good or bad), create their own editorials, etc. Instead of building your own blog and trying to get traffic to it so people can read the masterpiece you just spent so much time on, you will be able to sound off on an established site and allow people to share their thoughts on your

Looking at CAGR return rates are great over a decent length of time, but for the purposes of shorter more accurate timeframes I feel that metric can be a little blunt. CAGR takes the current price and shows you the annual percentage growth rate that starting from purchase price that gets you to there. Typically we use the retail release year as the start point, all the Brickpicker set pages do so. This is fine if you purchased it in that same year but if you bought it the year after or even 2 or

INTRODUCING THE BRICKPOINTS STORE... Jeff and I have been hinting around over the past several months on ways to earn BrickPoints. We also hinted about various ways to spend these points. Well today I am here to inform and explain the current BrickPoints system and the new BrickPoints Store. One of the best ways to invest in LEGO is by buying polybags/small LEGO sets...To be precise seasonal/exclusive polybags and sets: • If you have old polybags from old promotions like Mcdonalds or TRU those would go a lot more than average polybags • Holiday polybags go more than average one • They are Halloween, Christmas , May the Fourth , Easter and Summer polybags • LEGO Brickmaster sets would go for a lot more than average because they were not for sale in stores • The only thing more than

The 10215 Obi-Wan's Jedi Starfighter is the latest UCS set to be retired. Saying this the value of the set should increase soon, as almost all UCS sets do. This UCS set is one of the smaller sets. The set only has 676 pieces. This makes it the second smallest UCS set. The smallest is the Special Edition Naboo Starfighter with only 187 pieces. The set has no minifigures, like many other UCS sets, but the set does have a larger astromech head. Usually, UCS sets do really well in the secondary mark

The UCS R2-D2 is one of my favorite sets of all time that I have built. I got this set in April of 2013 and as soon as I came home from the store, I started building it. It was a fun build, but what really suprised me is that there was a variety of colors in the set. It is just not the blue, white, and gray you see on the outside of the set. on the inside there is a vaiety of colors such as yellow, green, and blue. For investing, the set is an UCS set. Usually these sets do well in the secondary

When I left Lego behind, I left it for something way more rock ‘n’ roll: rock ‘n’ roll. The move from primary school (elementary school) into secondary school (high school) marked the graduation from the precious toys of my childhood to the world of the pop charts. Here in the UK in the nineties, the battle was on betweenthe two biggest ‘Brit Pop’ bands of the time; Oasis (from Manchester) and Blur(from London). As a cash-strapped teenager you followed one – for me it wasOasis (although my fi

We have all read it before: "I got 5 Vampyre Castles at Walmart for $ 50 each!". Clearance finds is one of the most popular topics of this site, to the point that there are several different threads centered around it. Of course, it makes sense. It is to be expected that when a LEGO investing sets gathers around people from all around the world there is going to be some natural "bragging". To me, that's not bad at all, especially since most of the times members of this site are helpful enough to

A Look at the Arctic Sub-theme With summer almost here it's time to take a look at the new sets and analyze their investment potential. One of the most intriguing sub-themes out there this season is the Arctic themed line of sets from the City theme. Unlike most other city sub-themes that are available this wave and have new sets released regularly or every other year (such as Police, Traffic or Trains) the Arctic line hasn't been seen since 2000 (under the Town theme) and in those fourteen yea
