For over a century the cowboy has been the iconic American image recognized around the world, and the American “Old West” has been celebrated in art, music, literature, and of course movies and television programs. Long after the short-lived era of open range and long cattle drives came to an end, we still continue to admire and celebrate the stories and characters born out of that time. Popular representations may be more romantic than realistic, but they never seem to lose their appeal. I gre

You've heard of it on the news, in the papers, and online. It created overnight millionaires while making others broke. Governments are afraid of it and the public is confused by it. But it is here to stay. What am I talking about, you ask?  Crypto-currency In 2009, an anonymous online entity, going by the name of Satoshi Nakamoto, released a tremendously well-researched and thought out paper;explaining how an online, peer-to-peer, currency which would not be regulated or backed by any governmen

When LEGO investors evaluate a given set, they ask themselves, is this investment viable? Is it worth putting my hard earned money into? But, what does viable mean exactly? Is it anything that nets more than the inflation rate or the supposed risk free investment rate of US treasuries (let's not debate if treasuries are truly risk free)? Probably not. We all know there is a certain element of risk involved in LEGO investing that should command some risk premium, but what should that risk premium

Perhaps the biggest part of LEGO investing is finding your "knitch" of LEGO that you feel comfortable and wouldn't mind being stuck with for a very long time. Popular choices of favorite themes (not for investing) are: Star Wars Ninjago Creator Monster Fighters Town Modular Houses **Please Note: LoTR/The Hobbit and Super Heroes have been omitted because of lack of retired sets.** But are these themes actually good investments, or are they just “cool” to have? Let’s look at the stronger

We are in the midst of one of the best clearance times of the year for several retailers, including the two biggest and well known Lego retailers: Target and Walmart (I'm ignoring you TRU because you seem to think that clearance is a 5% discount on a set overpriced by 30%). A lot of people post the great deals they find in the forums. Unfortunately we see a lot of people saying they never find these deals. Well, while its true that not every Walmart or Target in every area puts clearance items

So I think most everyone here would agree that every investment has it's pros and cons, I think there are still a lot of people who are hesitant about trusting toys as an investment. I think everyone can agree that it is better to put your money in a situation where it can grow over a place where it can't (like a savings or checking account) because with inflation, that large sum of savings you have can be worth a lot less later on. But what makes all of us so attracted to Lego investing over al

I recently went to an unofficial LEGO convention called World War Brick 2013. It took place at the Brickmania headquarters in Minneapolis, Minnesota on June 28th-30th. They had a whole slew of military related displays that were either built by Brickmania, the Twin Cities LEGO Train Club, the Greater Midwest Lego® Train Club, and the weekend pass holders who brought their own personal displays. They had three groups of people. Staff. Those people were vendors who were selling items or were e

Happy 4th of July to everyone Stateside, and happy Thursday to everyone else! I wanted to update my blog with an admittedly overdue post. Today, I wanted to point everyone's attention to a very interesting recent trend I have been following: the deals on Technic that have recently been posted on Amazon UK. I have actually taken advantage of two of the recent sales and I couldn't be happier. Yet, the more I've picked through Lego listings on Amazon UK, the more Technic deals appear to have popped

There are thousands and thousands of LEGO investors, and even more LEGO fans and builders. Wouldn't it be great to have a system of rating your fellow brickers? I compiled a list based on what I have observed, so it is highly opinionated. I also came up with a few nicknames for people of such catagories: Investing and Reselling: Polybag Investor - Has less than $200 in investment sets, and more than 10 sets. Rookie to the Game - $300-$800 invested into LEGO, but has invested less than a month
