FIRST IMPRESSION | Score: 9

This set is the first in the Winter Village line and it is one of the best, second only to the Winter Village Cottage (10229).  I am a huge fan of the Winter VIlage subtheme.  The Toy Shop is very well done.  The shop front is very detailed with wreaths, arched windows, and two coler awning.  In addition to a great three-sided toy shop there is a huge, awesome Christmas tree.  My favorite part of the set and the items that I was particularly drawn to were the assortment of toys - that are each great little microbuilds.  There are so many interesting elements to this set that it really invites you to jump in and start playing with it.  The Christmas tree is very impressive and different from other LEGO trees of recent memory.  It is made up of more traditional LEGO elements instead of the newer "tree" elements most builders are used to.  There are so many instantly appealing aspects of this set - it really stands out at first sight.

UNIQUE PARTS | Score: 9

The most unique element of this set are the vintage style LEGO trees, the ladder, light brick, and seven exclusive minifigures.  The two carollers are the most notable of the lot and are very well done - complete with coat printing and capes as well as choir books.  The other minifigures include three kid skiers, an old man in green overalls, and a woman in a red jacket.  The ski poles for one of the children are actually purple light saber pieces, so that's nice to have as well.  Overall it's a nice variety of minifigures.

PLAYABILITY/BUILD EXPERIENCE | Score: 9

This set offers a great varety in its build experience.  There are a number of great microbuilds including a toy robot, jack in the box, and snowman.  The Christmas tree offers a nice build that is different from most LEGO tree builds.  The toy shop is very interesting with its split level roof and awning as well as its nice assortment of interior elements such as the upstairs workshop.

As far as playability there are not a lot of interactive elements besides the light brick which illuminates the second story workshop.  However, the kid skiers and the carollers along with all the great toys should make for a great dollhouse-like play experience and really encourage imaginative play.  I think it offers great playability just not in the form of, "push this in and 'X' happens" way.

VALUE FOR MONEY | Score: 9

When available at retail, the Toy Shop offered an excellent value for buyers.  At 59.99, the 815 piece set comes in at about 7.5 cents per piece which is outstanding.  Also, getting seven exclusive minifigures for that price is excellent as well.  There really is a lot included for only 59.99.  Unfortunately the set has been retired, so currently this set will cost you about $175 on the secondary market.  It is a wonderful set and it is the first in the WV line which I think makes it more collectible.  However,  I think the value is pretty stretched at that lofty price.

THEME POPULARITY | Score: 9

The Winter Village, a subtheme of TLG's seasonal theme, has been very popular.  The launch of the Toy Shop in 2009 marked the first entry for the Winter Village subtheme and it sold very well prior to its retirement.  There is a nostalgic quality to this theme that resonates well with adult fans.  The sets make great holiday displays and should remain popular for a very long time to come.  Each year one new set is added to the line and each year the oldest set has been dropped.  Each addition is intended to fit right in with the other sets of the theme to create an ever expanding winter scene.  Once a collector or fan gets a hold of one of these sets, they are sure to be hooked and will want to add more.

EXCLUSIVITY | Score: 10

The Toy Shop was only sold through LEGO stores and LEGO.com and only available from October to December for three holiday seasons making it very exclusive. The set was last available during the 2011 holiday after which it was retired.

PACKAGING | Score: 8

The set comes in a very attractive box showing off its great display attributes as well as highlighting the included light brick.  While not an aspect of the packaging per se, the set includes only one instruction manual which is surprising for a 815 piece set.  It would have been nice to have separate instructions to facilitate parent - child, cooperative builds.  The box is listed for 12+, but younger children shouldn't have an issue with many of the build tasks.  The micro-builds in particular should provide a satisfying challenge for children much younger than 12.  Certainly children of any age over three will enjoy playing with the set.

GROWTH POTENTIAL | Score: 9

All of the Winter Village sets appear to be investment winners.  The chart below shows the returns for each set in the line.  Keep in mind, the Toy Shop and Bakery have been retired.  While the Post Office and Cottage are expected to return in the 2013 holiday season.

The Toy Shop has nearly trippled in value from its original retail price.  I expect that the set's valuation may level off following the 2013 holiday season.  The set has experienced great growth already, so I would be hesitant to expect much further appreciation from this set.

DISPLAY QUALITY | Score: 9

The Toy Shop makes for a wonderful varied, delightful Christmas scene.  The two-level Toy Shop makes a nicely detailed display with its split roof line, large windows displaying toys, wreaths, and two-color awnings.  The grand Christmas tree is also impressive with its significant height and its complement of presents and toys.  The carollers, skiers, and snowball throwing children all make up a great festive and playful scene.  This is a great display set that also begs the viewer to join in the holiday fun.  Everyone will appeciate this set whether they are fans of LEGO or not.

CONCLUSION & FINAL ANALYSIS | Score: 9

The Toy Shop really set the standard of charm and detail for all Winter Village sets that followed.  TLG really got it right with this set and established a winning formula that was emulated in future WV sets.  The follow-up sets, the Bakery (10216) and the third installment - Post Office (10222) all feature roughly the same piece count, price point, and seven minifigures. They all make great sets that display well, and offer great playability.  I love this line of LEGO sets and hope they continue.  The Toy Shop is my second favorite of the line, second only to the Cottage.  It's a wonderful, well realized set that has also done wonderously for investors.

FIRST IMPRESSION | Score: 8
Bought this one from a local TRU around October. These winter sets are a great way to show your love for Lego in Christmas. I was told to buy this one as it'd serve as a replacement during the Holidays for my Maersk train LOL!

UNIQUE PARTS | Score: 9
This is the first set that I put together that has a brick that lights up. Also the way that the street lamp is presented here is really, really cool. The Christmas tree has a star on top that is only present in 2 sets. Seven minifigures, a cat, a snowman and a jack-in-the-box, and they all are really cool!

PLAYABILITY/BUILD EXPERIENCE | Score: 10
I have to give a 10 in this category to this set. This one is intended to be a seasonal set, supposedly to be displayed only around Christmas and it does deliver greatly. The many minifigures, the snowman, the tree, the bench, the shop with the cashier and the chimney, it all comes together nicely. The details on the shop are remarkable, the arc-like pieces, the clock, the robot and the location of the brick that lights up. Perfect.

VALUE FOR MONEY | Score: 9
This set has the second lowest PPP of the latest winter themed sets:

PPP toy shop: $7.361ct PPP bakery: $8.004c PPP post office: $8.515c PPP cottage: $6.711c

THEME POPULARITY | Score: 6
This set is not a 'round the year favorite, as it is a winter-oriented theme. Still, when it's it's time, this theme is a solid one.

EXCLUSIVITY | Score: 7
In Spain, sets from this theme were hard to find in retail stores, the only way to get them was from S@H and for some sets from Amazon's site. I'm pretty sure that this was a pattern only valid in Spain as in other bigger Lego markets in Europe the sets were widely available. And again, the seasonal factor kicks this theme's exclusivity factor a little bit up.

PACKAGING | Score: 5
A standard Lego box, not too much to comment regarding the packaging.

GROWTH POTENTIAL | Score: 8
Having already gone EOL, this is a set has bright days ahead. Being the oldest of these winter themed sets and boasting a CAGR close to 30%, profits from this one are guaranteed. The set has shown a steady climb in the last 10 months and the trend should keep up and could hit spikes as we near the holiday season.

DISPLAY QUALITY | Score: 10
Take it for what it is, a set to be displayed during winter. I had this one displayed on a table next to the front door where usually a train or a Star Wars set is and quoting my wife: "this one looks really nice, we should get the other ones". I think that says it all.

CONCLUSION & FINAL ANALYSIS | Score: 10
I put this set together with my wife in mid November 2012 and had it displayed until late February as this one is a winter themed set. Surely this one will be back when November comes around, and very likely will be joined by other winter sets. It has an appeal that only winter sets have, has a lot of minifigures and is a fun build.

Bottom line: for all of us married Lego fans who have a decoration obsessed wife, this theme is a way to get away with a Lego display on Christmas. From an investing perspective, the time of reaping the rewards has started and should continue for a while. This set won't level in the near future IMHO. So if you can get your hands on one of these do it, come December you should be seeing a profit on your investment.
