FIRST IMPRESSION | Score: 10

I first saw this set in a Lego catalogue and could not stop staring at it. I was in awe! I could not believe how realistic the Lego set looked. I thought I was looking at the real ship. I was impressed with the enormity of the set and could not believe how many pieces it has. I begged my parents for years until finally, they surprised me with it (I was not expecting to recieve it due to the price ($300)). When I recieved the Imperial Star Destroyer, I could not believe the size of the box. I was very young at the time, and I had trouble lifting it. It was a very impressive sight.

UNIQUE PARTS | Score: 9

There are no minifigures in this set, but they would look strange next to it if there were. They would not be to scale and there is no place to set them up (unlike in the Super Star Destroyer (10221)). I think Lego made the right decision by not including any. This set has at least 10 unique types of parts including the large engines at the back and the spherical shields at the top of the superstructure. 10 unique pieces is a lot for one set!

PLAYABILITY/BUILD EXPERIENCE | Score: 9

There is no playability with this set, but there is not supposed to be. It is strictly for display, and it looks great on display! I thoroughly enjoyed it. Some may complain of repetitiveness, but there needs to be repeating in the construction of this ship for it to be an accurate model. I really love this set and enjoyed the build.

VALUE FOR MONEY | Score: 10

Since I thought that the price was very high at retail (at the time), and since I was not the one to pay for it, I cannot comment on this too much. However, after building this set twice (once 8 years ago and once last week), I can say that it is worth a lot of money. At retail, this set had a price to piece ratio of approximately 9.6 cents per piece, which is decent for a Star Wars Ultimate Collector's Series set. I would have easily spent $300 on this set due to the impressiveness of it and the enjoyment of the build. Today, you would be lucky to find this set used for $650, so $300 for a new set doesn't sound like too much anymore. Also, if this set were released from Lego this year, it would most likely be at least $400.

For those of you who want to part out this set, I would say that it is unlikely to do this for a profit, since there are three enormous wheels that make the main engines in the back of the ship that are unique to this set. The cheapest I can find them is $60+ a piece, so that's $180 right there. There are many other unique pieces, so they are bound to be expensive as well. It may require more research, but it is probably not worth doing.

THEME POPULARITY | Score: 10

Set 10030 was the fourth UCS set released. The Ultimate Collector's Series is a very popular theme of Star Wars, which is also extremely popular among Lego enthusiasts. This set is highly sought after, as shown by the incredible growth it has achieved.

EXCLUSIVITY | Score: 10

This set was an exclusive when it first came out and was very hard to find. It is even harder to find today.

PACKAGING | Score: 10

Not much to comment about. Ordinary packaging with an extraordinarily sized box!

GROWTH POTENTIAL | Score: 10

This set has been retired for years and has shown immense growth, now selling for $1100 new! A set that has appreciated exceedingly well!

DISPLAY QUALITY | Score: 10

The ISD is one of the gems of my collection. If I could give it a rating higher than a 10 I would. It was the first large Lego set I ever constructed--so large in fact, that when I built it as a 7 year old, I needed my dad's assistance in attaching the big plates to the skeleton. At almost three feet long, this is a very impressive set, very true to the movies. What astounds me most is the way the designers were able to create the bottom at such an angle, and also how they were able to set the superstructure on top with flawless integration. The mini Blockade Runner is the perfect size, and is able to be placed in the hanger bay underneath the Star Destroyer.

CONCLUSION & FINAL ANALYSIS | Score: 10

This is in my top three sets for sure. I have had this set for more than have my life and I was forunate to get it when I was very little. $300 was an incredible price to buy this for, even back in 2002. I would recommend this set to everyone, even people who do not like Lego, because not only is the build fun, but it looks great on display! It is a must have.

FIRST IMPRESSION | Score: 10

What a massive set. The Imperial Star Destroyer is a very very big set. The set has three thousand ninty-six pieces. The set is displayed on two stands and the set comes with a mini Rebel Blockade Runner. The set was released in 2002 and at the time it was the largest Lego set ever produced. The set wowed me when I first saw and I think that this set is lready an iconic set. Here is what Lego.com said about this set:

Build the most awesome ship in the Star Wars universe! The Imperial Star Destroyer is the massively huge, incredibly powerful heart of the Emperor's fleet. Manned by the top crew in the Imperial Navy, the Star Destroyer was heavily armored and bristling with turbolasers and tractor beam projectors. One Star Destroyer alone was enough to strike fear into an entire star system! Now you can add the Imperial Navy's best-known and most powerful ship to your LEGO Star Wars collection! Measuring an impressive 37'? by 23'?, this model dwarfs any LEGO Star Wars ship ever produced. This beautifully designed and one-of-a-kind collector's item comes with a special display stand and collectors card. Also includes an exclusive Rebel Blockade Runner Mini-Model, so you can recreate the opening scenes of Star Wars IV: A New Hope! UNIQUE PARTS | Score: 7

For this set, there are no minifigures. That is one of the sad features of the UCS. Only a few of the sets come with a minifigure. The set would have been better if they had added Darth Vader or an Imperial Officer, but that did not happen. Also the set is made up of normal pieces that are found in a lot of other set, so there are no rare pieces and colors. The only desirable feature about this set is that the set has a large amount of pieces, which is over three thousand.

PLAYABILITY/BUILD EXPERIENCE | Score: 8

Playability Experience

The set is not meant to be played with. It is a massive set that would wiegh a lot, which may make it hard to pick up and play with. The only playability I can think of for this set is the mini Rebel Blockade Runner, which has its own clear stand.

Build Experience

The Imperial Star Destroyer has about thirty-one hundred pieces in the set. That would take me about seven to eight hours to build the set completely. A huge set like this is always fun to build.

VALUE FOR MONEY | Score: 7

The Imperial Star Destroyer has a retail price of $298.99 USD. There are three thousand ninty-sixe pieces in this set. That menas that the PPP ratio for this set is ten cents per piece. I would consider that a fair PPP ratio. the ratio would be better if the set was on sale. Let's compare this set to other sets from the UCS.

THEME POPULARITY | Score: 10

The Imperial Star Destroyer set comes from the Star Wars theme. The set is under the Ultimate Collectors Series sub theme. These sets are the best sets, in my opinion, ever made by Lego. There are also some of the largest sets ever created. The Star wars theme is a very popular theme. Many of the set sell well in the primary market and there are often people scouring eBay to find a set at a better price or they are looking to get a set because it EOL before they could get it. Either way, Star wars sets sell very in both the primary market and the secondary market. Because of all the people who want these sets, the values for these sets will go up.

EXCLUSIVITY | Score: 7

The Imperial Star Destroyer set is very exclusive. Because the set is a UCS, only a limited amount of stores sold these other than the Lego stores or online. The set was no in limited production. The set is not from any Lego trade shows that I know of. The set is not sold in the primary market anymore, so you can only get this set in the secondary market.

PACKAGING | Score: 6

There is no unique packaging or special markings on this set that would differentiate this set from other Lego sets.

GROWTH POTENTIAL | Score: 7

The Imperial Star Destroyer has a retail price of $298.99 USD. The current value of this set is $1,065.73 USD. That means that the CAGR for this set is 12.25%. That is a good CAGR, but not as good as the UCS Millennium Falcon. Let's compare this set to other sets from the UCS.

DISPLAY QUALITY | Score: 10

The Imperial Star Destroyer has many display attributes. The set sits on two stands, and the mini Rebel Blockade Runner has a clear stand. My favorite part of this set is all the details of the ship, especially all the weapons systems.

CONCLUSION & FINAL ANALYSIS | Score: 9

I think that the Imperial Star destroyer is a great set to have. Let's look at the pros and cons of this set.

Pros:

  • Decent PPP ratio.
  • Exclusive set.
  • Good CAGR.
  • Great display piece.

Cons:

  • No minifigures or rare pieces.

Overall, I think that this set is great to have, build, look at, and invest in.
