MEMBER OWNS SET: YES     MEMBER HAS BUILT SET: YES

FIRST IMPRESSION | Score: 5

Sometimes it is nice to actually build a new set instead of cleaning, sorting, ordering parts for a second hand one. This is the second NEW set I built since I started buying Lego (6 months). The first being the DeLorean.

I didn't expect much from this set.   I knew it was a playset, with a very small number of pieces. It's a 5 minifigure set with 364 pieces. I wanted to pay max 10c/brick and I paid 36.90€ inclusive delivery. Reasonable pricing. I had nothing going for or against this set. I just liked the Iron Man movies and thought I'd give myself an early bday present. So mainly for the minifigures I bought it. I just have to have one!

Contents

UNIQUE PARTS | Score: 7

Minifigures:

MinifiguresAll the figures have double printing on the head.

  • Pepper Potts: Nicely executed, too bad it's a generic pants but nicely built.
  • MARK 42 Armor:Comes with white head. Pretty Detailed.
  • Tony Stark: The torso is very nice and pretty unique.
  • Mandarin: Also very detailed. This one does have printing on pants. Nice.
  • Extremis Soldier: It's a double printed, glow in the dark head... yeey! The torso is not really that special.

Unique parts:

  • The stickering of course. If ever you make a displayable Tony Starks mansion, you will need those (if you don't print them yourself, that is)
  • I like the white curved pieces on the top of the mansion.
  • I like the creation of the blender.

The rest are pretty normal pieces but I remind myself that this is just a playset so I am pretty content of this part. What holds me from giving it an 8 is the sticker part. I reaaaally don't like stickers.

PLAYABILITY/BUILD EXPERIENCE | Score: 8

It is a playset and the playability is...... pretty high. Because of the helicopter, mansion and high amount of minifigs, there are plenty of things to do.This togetter with the missiles (I really like them) and the EXPLODING of the mansion, a playset pur sang.

Building it was pretty straightforward, even the stickering went pretty smooth.

The HelicopterHelicopter Lenght

The helicopter was pretty easy. I do wonder how this helicopter is flown. Where normally the control panel is, there is a red slope, no print, no stickering. I wonder if this helicopter is flown via thermic reaction.Or perhaps the Extremis soldier got pretty pissed (we all know what he did with that poor water tower). The colors are a good match and the design, however not that detailed appeals to me.

 Mansion SizeMansion

The mansion is small.. duh...but it is filled with eyecatchers. The stickered windows, the blender, the dual screen, even the green cabinets. When building, I had questions at the solidity of the thing, but once it's actually built, it seems sturdy enough.

It was a relaxed, easy build, no complexities.

VALUE FOR MONEY | Score: 7

10c/piece is alot imho. So I would rate it rather low on this piece.

But...

This is a licensed theme, there are 5 minifigures and that silly robot that counts as an extra minifig. It can in a way justify those cost the 10c/piece I paid for it. The set is small, but it contains valuable assets if you want to actually build a more AFOL version of the mansion. 2-3 sets can help you along, keeping the mansion pieces and selling the rest.

Hence very good deal for people that sell Lego parted out sets.

THEME POPULARITY | Score: 9

I think this theme will continue to do well in the future. We, Iron Man fans, drag our children to the movies, they like Iron Man and when they are able to spend some allowances on a later age. I think this set is certainly valuable for 4-8 years still, if in the time another movie comes out where Iron Man is a part of.

EXCLUSIVITY | Score: 3

You can get it ev-er-y-wh-er-e.... nothing exclusive about it.

PACKAGING | Score: 7

Front of BoxBack of Box

The Box is nothing special. It has the general Marvel Super Heroes layout with on the front the nice picture and the minifigs and at the back the playmodus. Not such a fan of the old comic books sounds, but I guess it is part of it. Standard, not wooowww, not bad.

GROWTH POTENTIAL | Score: 8

I think there is growth potential for this set during 5 years still. Many AFOLS like the movies and the kids are fans as well of this. It has a decent amount of minifigs which attracts minifig collectors and the pieces where the mansion is made out are pretty nice. I think it will rise to around 60 3 months after EOL and with a ceiling of 80 or about double MSRP. My opinion of course, a gut feeling, I have no evidence to back-up my claim :)

DISPLAY QUALITY | Score: 3

Too small of a set to be truly a display set imho

CONCLUSION & FINAL ANALYSIS | Score: 8

Pick one up if you like Iron Man Movies or collect Minifigs and build it.

Pick up 5 to sell in 1-2 years.
