MEMBER OWNS SET: YES     MEMBER HAS BUILT SET: YES

FIRST IMPRESSION | Score: 8

As a commercial boat captain I can't say I've every been excited to see the Coast Guard, but this set is great from the get go. Four vehicles, six minifigs, three sharks, a dog, a crab, and a lighthouse. This set has a lot going on. Of the Coast Guard subset this is the best.

UNIQUE PARTS | Score: 7

The large boat hull is unique to this set, lots of the orange that are mainly found in this theme.

PLAYABILITY/BUILD EXPERIENCE | Score: 9

The build was a little on the simplistic side, which is common in the City theme. Basicaly several small builds. The playability, on the other hand, is off the scale. The large ship with an openable and removable bridge also has a lauchable mini sub and a helicopter. The set also features a smaller boat with an inexperienced captain who runs himself aground on the rocks surrounding a lighthouse. Oh, and the boats float. Good times are predicted for all.

VALUE FOR MONEY | Score: 7

The MSRP of $79.99 gives a PPB of $0.16, a little on the high side. Though not uncommon givin the large boat hull included in the set. This set has been discounted several times bringing the PPB down substatialy. The set is only 449 pieces, but with the large hull piece seem much larger.

THEME POPULARITY | Score: 8

The Coast Guard subset has outperformed the general City Theme and I would expect that trend to continue. Being a boat only adds to the popularity as does the Coast Guard aspect.

EXCLUSIVITY | Score: 6

This set is widely available, but sold out early prior to Christmas 2013.

PACKAGING | Score: 8

The packaging does an excellent job of playing to this sets many strengths. It shows off the Large Coast Guard patrol boat and highlights each vehicle and minifig.

GROWTH POTENTIAL | Score: 8

The closest set to compare this one to is 7287 Police Boat. The main ship is of a similar size although it lacks all the extra bits that 60014 can claim.

7287 Released 2011 for a MSRP of $39.99. As of late 2013 New examples are bringing $95.81 on average. Nearly 2.5 times retail.

In all honesty 60014 is simply a much better set so I see no reason why the results of 7287 cannot be matched if not beaten. I would expect an eBay average for a MISP example of 60014 to be $180-$200 in the first year or so after EOL. It may push higher, but in my experience sets with fewer that 500 pieces have trouble breaking the $200 barrier.

DISPLAY QUALITY | Score: 9

This set is a great display piece. The main ship is large, but not too large and displays well in its own right. The smaller boat and light house only add to it.

CONCLUSION & FINAL ANALYSIS | Score: 9

This set has a lot of potential. Boat collectors, Coast Guardsman, LEGO fans. I see this set doing extremely well. It has only been out for about a year so you should have time to stock up if you missed out on all the Christmas sales. For the most part I tend to avoid the City Theme, but this set has enough going for it for me to make an exception. If you haven't already done so BUY THIS SET.
