FIRST IMPRESSION | Score: 9

What's not to like about the VW bus, a classic iconic bus. This mini-me version of its bigger brother, the Lego Creator Volkswagen T1 Camper Van 10220 will find appeal with lego collectors, classic car fans, stoners, deadheads, hippies, pretty much everybody. They do a great job recreating the larger bus but in a much smaller package. One look and it's hard to resist pulling the plastic wrapper apart and building it just to see what's inside.

UNIQUE PARTS | Score: 7

For a polybag without any minifigs, not a lot is unique here although there are 76 pieces. Of course the VW sticker on the front of the van is unique and the most desirable part of the set-you can't call it a VW bus without a VW on it. The rounded white top is created by two 93604 pieces which are somewhat unusual. The joy is in the package, not the invidual parts of this set.

PLAYABILITY/BUILD EXPERIENCE | Score: 9

For a poly bag this was really fun to build. After I built it with my kids we took out their little micro Harry Potter figures from one of the lego games and loaded up the bus.

VALUE FOR MONEY | Score: 10

This set was a bonus set in the summer of 2013 but has recently re-emerged in some lego stores with a sales price of about $5. I was fortunate to scoop some up at that price, which I consider a steal considering the set routinely now sells on ebay for a minimum of $25 and has sold in the $50 range.

THEME POPULARITY | Score: 10

The big brother of this set, 10220, is one of the more popular Lego Creator sets and polybags in a word, are hot.  As I see it, anyone who buys the bigger bus would also need to have the smaller one and as such, this can enhance the value of the larger set when sold as a lot.

EXCLUSIVITY | Score: 10

Distributed initially to those who spent over $75 at the lego store during the summer of 2013, this was/is an exclusive to the Lego store. What is not clear at this point is how limited production is, since some sets have shown up for sale again at Lego stores. I assume these are just leftovers/surplus.

PACKAGING | Score: 8

I think if it had come in a box, similar to some of the smaller exclusive christmas village 'gifts' this could have been a more attractive package than the polybag, but there is a special limited-edition rarity of coming in a bag

GROWTH POTENTIAL | Score: 10

As of December 2013, this bus is already selling around the $20 range although there seems to be quite a wide selling range. Events that I see increasing the price from this point include:

1. Retirement of 10220

2. The latest batch of VW batches drying up at lego stores

3. The release of future similar car polybags (there are already rumours of the release of a large mini-Cooper..if this happens it's not beyond the realm of possibility for lego to release a polybag smaller version of that as a promotion).

Although predicting the future is always subject to uncertainty, assuming continued high demand, I could see this set selling up to $50 in the next couple of years, particularly if the larger version sees great gains.

DISPLAY QUALITY | Score: 10

Fun enough to keep on your cubicle desk and hard for visitors to resist. Even better when put next to its big brother.

CONCLUSION & FINAL ANALYSIS | Score: 9

This is one of my favorite sets from 2013.  I consider this to be the equivalent of a 'small cap stock' in which greater percentage gains are possible than with larger sets. Taking its baseline value at the $5 that this set has sold at in stores, percentage wise I think this very well may be the greatest gainer of the 2013 sets thus far.

The only reason I give this set a 9: If I had designed the set, I would've made a Jerry Garcia micro figure to drive it. That's about the only improvement I could suggest.

I see little risk on the downside with current prices. The greatest impediment to this being an investment, in my view, is the temptation of building it so with this in mind it is hard to own just one.
