In terms of ideal, it all depends on how big a city/train layout you want. I own the Holiday Express, but it`s all boxed up now and has never been a part of a major set up. 6x8 would be a good size I`d say based on the many photos of other people`s set ups, but it will entirely depend on how much you have to put into your lay out.
