Factory sealed or not a chance?

I bought this today assuming had long been opened. Then looking closer I notice the tape –very yellowed and poorly aged– hasn't been cut. This does not look like something that would have been at retail but since I don't know how these were originally packaged and sold in 1977, I figured I'd ask you experts before I open it up. On the unlikely chance this is actually legitimately sealed.

Thanks for the help. I've been a long-time LEGO fan and a casual collector. It's always nice to learn more about my one of my favorite companies.

I'd guess that's not the way Lego sealed the set. I believe they may have been shrink wrapped. Only one way to find out....

The LEGO sets of that age (late '70s/very early '80s) had a tab that was glued to the inside of the box.  It was easy enough to open and allowed you to continue to use the box for your set / parts. 

The set looks like someone taped it shut a long time ago, hence the age of the tape.  I would not expect a complete set with that tape.

Thank you both for the feedback. I opened it up and while they were clearly used, pieces are in great shape. Sadly it's missing a handful. Still a cool set to have so I'm happy I took the chance.
