FIRST IMPRESSION | Score: 7

The smallest and cheapest set that follows the new Superman movie. Comes with two really cool mini-figures and a small vehicle that seems unimpressive and a tower that really doesn't have much purpose. The main reason of purchasing this set was for the two mini-figures.

UNIQUE PARTS | Score: 7

This set comes with two mini-figures:

Superman - Found in three other sets

General Zod - Found only in this set and is unique!

Some other unique pieces are:

-Lattice Tower 2x2x10

-2x4x1 Brick With Wheel Opening

-2x2 Plate with 1 Knob

-2x4x2/3 Plate with Bow

There are a few other pieces that aren't found in that many sets but otherwise there seems to be quite a few generic pieces.

PLAYABILITY/BUILD EXPERIENCE | Score: 6

Here is the description from Lego.com:

Stop General Zod with Superman™!

General Zod is wreaking havoc in a downtown Metropolis Showdown against Superman™. Stop General Zod from trapping Superman under the collapsing antenna tower by blocking it with the cool yellow car. Battle as you take Superman up the tower, flip him through the air with the catapult function and swing him on the antenna. Includes 2 minifigures: Superman and General Zod.

• Includes 2 minifigures: Superman™ and General Zod
• Features antenna tower with a catapult, collapse function and a yellow car with easy-to-grab handles
• Also includes base with flip and explode functions and mast with antenna and dish
• Flip the car into the air with the catapult function!
• Collapse the antenna!
• Lift the car with easy-to-grab handles!
• Car measures over 1" (3,5cm) high, 4" (11cm) long and 2" (6cm) wide
• Antenna tower measures over 5" (15cm) high, 2" (7cm) wide and 2" (7cm) deep

The build experience for this was very very simple. It took about ten minutes to piece everything together. One of the easier smaller sets and once it was built I had to question the playability of it all. The vehicle is nicely build and holds together well. However, the tower falls apart fairly easy and the bottom base is just a random assortment of pieces put together that really don't serve much purpose. I know I am being a little harsh and maybe this has some purpose with the other sets, but I haven't paired them yet.

VALUE FOR MONEY | Score: 8

Let's take a look at the other Superman sets released at this time and compare the overall price per piece and see what kind of value we have:

Superman 2013 Collection
Set Number Model Original MSRP Amount of Pieces Price Per Piece
76002 Superman Metropolis Showdown $12.99 USD 119 Pieces $0.11 USD
76003 Superman Battle of Smallville $49.99 USD 418 Pieces $0.12 USD
76009 Superman Black Zero Escape $19.99 USD 168 Pieces $0.12 USD

So comparing to the other two sets released right now we can see our Metropolis Showdown set has a cheaper price per piece ratio. While this set really doesn't hold much value in the actual build I feel with the unique mini-figure though that this has a lot of potential.

THEME POPULARITY | Score: 8

Superman is a very popular theme and with the movie coming out this summer it definitely brings some more attention to this theme than some of the others. I think the Superman theme is going to do great!

EXCLUSIVITY | Score: 6

Nothing exclusive about this set. It can currently be found everywhere.

PACKAGING | Score: 10

The box is small, which makes it excellent for shipping purposes(think after EOL)! There is ALOT happening on this little box. Superman shooting a laser from his eyes to the tower thats being lifted by General Zod. The Superman logo in the bottom right hand corner is simply Epic. The vehicle is flying through the air, the way its positioned you can get a good idea of how its built. in the upper right hand corner we can see the Lego version of Superman in his Superman stance and his cape flying in the wind. The DC Universe Super Heroes logo is well positioned next to LEGO logo. Overall one of my favorite depictions on a box that I have seen. Really a ton of eye candy here.

GROWTH POTENTIAL | Score: 8

I think there could be some potential in this set depending on how the movie does. The Superman figure isn't unique but the General Zod character can only be found in this set which could really help drive prices. Right now the MSRP is $12.99 and I feel that it can definitely be had on discount. This set reminds me of Captain America's Avenging Cycle set. Similarly priced, same size, almost same price per piece. One of the things that Captain America's set has over this one is we all know the popularity of The Avengers. Does Man of Steel hold up to that theme? Right now we can't tell. However, by Christmas time we will know how this theme is going to do and how the set will perform in the secondary market. My advice, go ahead and wait and pick this set up in the clearance aisles in about six-seven months. Keep your eye out on the box office results of Man of Steel and critics review to see how it goes. If its like Nolan's Batman then pick up as many of these sets as you can!!

DISPLAY QUALITY | Score: 6

There is nothing about this set beyond the mini-figures that is worth displaying. If you are a mini-figure collector then the unique General Zod may catch your eye and that could be displayed in your case. Otherwise, look elsewhere.

CONCLUSION & FINAL ANALYSIS | Score: 8

My final conclusion is to keep a close eye on this set! Make sure you also see the results of the movie whether you like Man of Steel or not see how it does at the box office and read others opinions not he film. If its popular and even a hint at a sequel then this set is going to explode in profits down the line after retirement!

Pro's:

-It's Superman! and Super Heroes set

-Man of Steel movie is expected to be a big hit this summer

-Small sets tend to do well in the secondary market

-small box, easy to ship!

Con's:

-Hard to predict this set since we don't know how the film is going to do

-Isn't the first Superman set available.

-Other than two mini-figures this set has nothing else to it

FIRST IMPRESSION | Score: 7

With a title like 'Metropolis Showdown' you'd expect to be in for something big!  Well, you'd be wrong.  This is a solid little 12.99 set based on the upcoming 2013 Superman movie.  The tower and sharp little car standout along with the new 2013 Superman minifig.  The general Zod minifig is a dissapointment here as he lacks the helmet and cape option that appears in the other Superman sets and offers no unique printing.  Frankly any General Zod minifig that isn't bald with a soul patch is a dissapointment in my book.

UNIQUE PARTS | Score: 6

The Superman minifig is great with his new unique for 2013 hair piece and updated printing.  It is the cheapest way to get Superman, so that alone makes this set worthwhile.  However, this is the same minifg in all of the other Superman sets- no exclusives here.  The General Zod is also a wattered down version of the same General Zod that appears in sets 76003 and 76009.  On a positive note the tower piece in this set is a nice inclusion and the car offers some nice parts for a small set.

PLAYABILITY/BUILD EXPERIENCE | Score: 9

This set offers a fun and simple build.  The playability is limited to the car which is done well and the tower that can be knocked over (Shloooom!).  There is not much here, but it is a more substantial build than you get from most 12.99 sets.

VALUE FOR MONEY | Score: 9

With two solid minifigs, a decent build of 119 pieces, this set offers a great value for 12.99.  There is an oppotunity to part the set out and sell the minifigs, but that will be short lived as both of these figs will be plentiful.

THEME POPULARITY | Score: 8

The superheroes licensed theme has largely done well for investors.  The success of this line may depend somewhat on the success of the upcoming movie.  If the movie franchise does well then the 'Man of Steel' line should do quite well also.

EXCLUSIVITY | Score: 6

This set will be widely available at all typical retailers.

PACKAGING | Score: 7

The packaging has very attractive action shots of what the set offers along with the soon to be iconic "Shloooom!"  Just wait all the kids will be saying it.

GROWTH POTENTIAL | Score: 4

The long term growth potential is probably limited since the build is nothing unique and the minifigs are not exclusive.  The Superman minifig is very well down, but he will be the next Jack Sparrow appearring in a plethora of sets and easy to come by.  As an investment, this set offers an opportunity to flip the minifigs for the first couple of months of the sets release, but will be limited.

DISPLAY QUALITY | Score: 4

The only display value this set has is to add it to the top of a modular building so that Zod and Supe can duke it out over your otherwise peaceful city.

CONCLUSION & FINAL ANALYSIS | Score: 7

76002 is a solid little set with a great value.  It will sell well at the outset and it provides a good way to get a hold of a 2013 Superman, but it has limited investment appeal if purchased at retail.
